1. Meeting of the Waters

The meeting of the waters is a natural phenomenon and one of the Amazon's best-known attractions. Nature demonstrates its majesty as the muddy brown waters of the Rio Solimões meet the black waters of the Rio Negro. The rivers don't mix because of differences which include volume, temperature, velocity and density, and so the rivers run side by side for miles before merging to form the mighty Amazon River. Depending on conditions, we may also see pink or grey dolphins fishing and playing.

2. Pirarucu Fish Farm

The pirarucu is one of the world’s largest fresh water fish, reaching up to 3 meters (10 feet) and some 200 kilos (over 400 pounds). The fish are farmed by a local river dweller and kept in open tanks on floating wooden pontoons at the river side.

Seeing their lightning-fast reactions and feeling their enormous strength when you drop bait near them on a line is very impressive (and harmless to the fish).

3. Janauary Ecological Park

You’ll have a little walk on a suspended boardwalk to a pond where the famous giant Vitoria Regia water lilies lie. There are often some alligators sunning themselves in the lake, and along the way you may see monkeys high up in the canopy. The high water season will allow us to explore the area from a small motor boat, providing a great feel for mother nature as we journey right into the flooded forest. In the dry season, we can have a short hike in the rainforest instead, in order to witness its majesty. Among the possible fauna to be seen are alligators, birds, monkeys and sloths.

4. Piranha Fishing

This traditional and very popular activity is best done towards the end of the afternoon when the piranha are looking for food. Although it looks easy to catch these voracious predators, for some reason the local guide is usually luckier with his catch – perhaps because he knows exactly when to strike (before the piranha has stolen all the bait!). The guide knows just where to go for the best fishing, but if for some reason the fish aren’t biting, we can choose not to extend the activity.

5. Cayman Night Spotting

This catch & release activity can only be done in darkness. Our local guide is pretty good, and it's usually not too long before he'll spot the shining eyes of a Cayman. After approaching slowly, he'll catch the Cayman (if it's not a 2 meter, six-footer) by the back of his head, and bring it inside the boat when you can feel the reptile's skin, hold it (if you're daring enough) and of course take a picture. Then he will carefully release the animal back into the river or lake.
