CANOEING THE URUBU RIVER

Travelling by motorized canoe on the remote Urubu River is the most exotic experience you will get from any Day Trip. You will hike through a virgin rainforest and reach distant waterfalls and caves that few have seen.

Recommendation:  Combine the Urubu River day trip with the Waterfall & Cavern day trip. Options for overnight accommodations include camping or a comfortable hotel in the small town of Presidente Figueiredo.

1. Road trip in Amazon Rainforest

The Urubu River bridge from where our descent will begin is located approximately 100 km (65 miles) north of Manaus, and about 7 km from  Presidente Figueiredo, a small town that lies above sandstone rocks of marine origin.  The geology of the area gave rise to the formation of dozens of waterfalls, rapids, caverns, grottos, etc. During the 1.5h road trip, you can enjoy the scenery from your comfortable a/c vehicle, and you might be surprise to see how much sand there is 1,500 km away from the Atlantic ocean J.

 2. Scenic Canoeing (motorized)

The Amazon jungle and the narrow Urubu River will open its picturesque surroundings to you as your small canoe leaves the bridge and slowly runs through the river’s twists and turns. From the slow moving canoe you can enjoy the scenery and perhaps a few birds or even the beautiful blue morpho  butterfly.  At the end of the day, the sunset, moonlight and stars all join in to create a lovely scenery during the return trip upriver.

3. Remote Moon Waterfall

We will anchor on the river shore of the Urubu River and hike for about 30 minutes, arriving at the remote, non-touristy “Moon Waterfall”. Given its distant location downriver river and through rainforest, few people reach this remote area. A refreshing swim in the bottom basin is recommended. For the more adventurous seeking an awesome experience, it’s possible to climb the side of the waterfall and go behind the waters in a little rock cavity that holds 3-4 persons.

4. Picnic style lunch by the riverside

While you enjoy your swim, the staff will prepare lunch.  After lunch, you may want to relax in a hammock stretched out by the river side.  The crew will slowly get everything on track for the next segment and we will be on our way up the river for the last visit.

5. Explore a bat cave

For this activity, we will hike through the rainforest for 30 minutes until we reach an interesting bat cave occupied during their breeding season. After squeezing yourself through a low/narrow rock passage, you will enter a spectacular main chamber in which a little waterfall runs through a hole in the centre of the roof. Occasionally small caiman or alligators rest on the bottom of the shallow rocky pool. Swimming is not recommended here J

6. Local river dweller visit

Learn about the way of life of river dwellers that form tiny communities all over the Amazon. They have basic commodities for survival, very few comforts, and adhere to a different lifestyle than most visitors are accustomed to.

7. Other Option - Paddle canoe (extra)

The paddle canoe is surely a nice way to slow things down and enjoy the silence and natural sounds of the rainforest. However, please note that some of the other activities will have to be shortened or skipped in order to allow time for  the paddle canoe activity. Those alterations can be made in dialogue with your guide.

8. Other Option - Canopy Tree-Climbing (extra)

Tree-Climbing is an excellent choice to bring your overall experience literally to the top. This is an authentic experience in the deep rainforest, away from any beaten trail.  There are no fixed structures, no platforms; it's you and the tree... J. For safety reasons we hire the professional services of tree-climbing experts. You will be in secure hands and we guarantee that the sensation going up to the canopy is breathtaking. The duration of the activity is about 2 hours (based on 2 guests). Please note that it requires good physical fitness to hoist yourself one step at a time to the top; most of the effort is achieved by your legs.  You may rest at any time :-)
