Our History

Amazon Day Trips started its journey in 2005, when Jean Claude Comeau returned to Manaus from his native home of New Brunswick in Canada with his Brazilian wife Maria, (whom he met during a previous period in Manaus). After 10 years in Canada, the family, now with Canadian born son Mathieu, decided it was time to leave the cold behind and seek new warmer horizons.

In 2006, Jean Claude met Mathieu Pelletier Poirier *, founder of Amazon Mystery Tours (AMT). The 2 Canadians shared a vision of adventure-tourism and started a work partnership and Mathieu inspired the newcomer as he patiently shared his passion and love for the Amazon rainforest and for its people.
Amazon Day Trips (ADT) was officially registered in June of 2009 and continues to work alongside its sister company Amazon Mystery Tours. Together they strive to promote the importance of ecotourism and expand its philosophy to make the Amazon and the world a better place for all.

Our Team

Jean Claude Comeau

Founder, Owner, Host and Correspondent

Jean Claude finally settled in Manaus in 2005 with plans for a B&B project, which soon turned into a bespoke tour operation business.  Fluent in English, French, and Portuguese, he has grown to know and love Manaus, the Amazon, the Cultures and the beautiful peoples during his many years in the region both before and since taking up Brazilian residency.

In line with his business degree and background, Jean Claude gained extensive customer service experience which he now uses to provide guests with total peace of mind in choosing their best Amazon option. Jean Claude is often your first point of contact and he aims to respond to your emails and enquiries in a friendly and informative manner.  His personal attention is such that some clients have remained in correspondence as friends long after their Amazon experiences.

Miguel Rocha Da Silva

Ecotourism Consultant and Riverboat Cruise operator for ADT and AMT; Founder of the Almerinda & Malaquias Foundation;

For over 30 years, Miguel Rocha has lead river expeditions, taking people from all over the world to the most remote places of the Amazon region.

Nothing can describe Miguel  better  than his very own words:

"I was born in the middle of the beautiful. I was born in the middle of the Amazon jungle. The waves of the great river rocked the canoe… my cradle, while my mother washed clothes on the riverbanks. Emerging from within the water, trees stretched out their branches to
protect me from the rays of the sun with their shadow. A profusion of bird sounds induced me to a peaceful sleep."

Rinaldo Furtado

Tour/Expedition Manager, Head Guide and Correspondent

Rinaldo is our main correspondent, head guide and tour/expedition manager, for AMT (since 2004) and ADT (since 2008). He has years of experience as head guide with Amazon Mystery Tours leading kayak expeditions through remote rivers and deep rainforest. His experience as a guide is a great asset as he can offer his expertise to our guests to help them plan their dream trip to the Amazon. Rinaldo is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese and has extensive knowledge of the Manacapuru, Urubu, Jatapu, Uatama, Solimões, Rio Negro and Amazon Rivers.

He’s an expert at identifying and describing the flora and fauna of the jungle. He can catch caimans/alligators and tarantulas barehanded (no exaggeration!). He loves to share his knowledge with people that come to the Amazon rainforest with an open mind and active curiosity. Rinaldo is very in tune with nature and his laid-back attitude will inspire confidence in the most timid adventurer!

 *A Memorial

Mathieu Pelletier Poirier +1966… 18 February, 2009

Let us never forget the founder of Amazon Mystery Tours, Mathieu Pelletier Poirier, or his vision, his work and his legacy.

Originally from Saint-Laurent’s Island, Quebec in Canada, Mathieu first came to the Amazon as a visitor.  Like many of our visitors, Mathieu fell in love with the rainforest and its people.  But what made Mathieu special was that he ended up sharing that love with over 20,000 visitors he guided through the Amazon rainforest during his 15 years career.

Mathieu was no doubt an excellent guide.  Early in his career he was recognized by Conde Nast’s magazine (Gold list edition)! He proved to be an outstanding expedition leader and a visionary. After spending years exploring new territories and rivers, Mathieu decided to follow his dream and founded Amazon Mystery Tours. He started to provide average tourists with adventurous kayak/camping expeditions through remote parts of the rainforests.

His vision of adventure-through-tourism soon proved to be a winning formula, being recognized by the Frommers guide book and placed in “The Best of Brazil” section, among “The most Unforgettable Travel Experiences” : Kayak in the Amazon, from Mathieu’s new Amazon Mystery Tours. Mathieu would say “Nothing makes me happier than sharing with visitors the real, pristine Amazon forest, its sights, sounds and smells.”

His vision went beyond adventures. His dream was to build a private reserve as part of an ecological corridor project and help preserve the rainforest and the communities he loved.

In 2008 at 39 years old, Mathieu was diagnosed with a terminal liver cancer, he had about a year to live. He wished for his young business continue and grow. It was more than a business Mathieu was leaving behind, it was a philosophy for the tourism industry in the Amazon. Mathieu brought together the senior guide, cook, driver and office staff and they all became partners in the new Amazon Mystery Tours. Mathieu passed away February 18th, 2009 and was buried along the Rio Negro, in the land that had buried itself in his soul.
